Amphibians and Reptiles
The Solent region is an important area of Britain for herpetofaunal conservation. It supports all nine of the widespread species of amphibians and terrestrial reptiles, but also a number of rare and restricted species i.e. sand lizard, smooth snake and natterjack toad. Coastal habitats are essential to the continued existence of Britain's rare amphibians and reptiles, in particular mature heathland and sand dune systems.
In the Solent the coastal dune and heath habitats provide habitats for both the great crested newt and the Natterjack toad, Bufo calamita.
